What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport in which orienteer use an accurate, detailed map and a compass to find points in the landscape...

History
  • Began in Sweden in the nineteenth century.
  • It was primarily a military event and was part of military training.
  • It was not until 1919 that the modern version of orienteering was born in Sweden as a competitive.
International Orienteering Federation (IOF)
  • 1961 - IOF in Copenhagen.
  • 10 cunturies:  Bulgaria, czechoslavakia, denmark, finland, Hungary, West Germany, East Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland.
Objectives of Orienteering
  • Gain the basic skills of land navigation using map and compass
  • Improve physical fitness
  • Know what to expect at a standard competition
  • Acquire an increased awareness of the environment
